Cogitations - Salcombe

The Road to Salcombe

It’s a lovely short spin to the castle
In the crystal morning sun
Then the routing begins to unravel
And the bridleway’s not much fun

Either pedalling hard or breaking hard
Two most profound dislikes
While I’m wondering about poor Richard
And why cars hit “invisible” bikes

Before getting any more cross
Blackpool Sands, our first stop of the day
Then a welcome flat stretch to Torcross
Along its storm-breached causeway

Old Hallsands fell into the sea
Cause the tides around here have teeth
The villagers had already foreseen
The result of dredging beneath

Mark’s advice is not something I seek
And the detour is not worth the candle
His name will be mud all week
Cause the climb back out we can’t handle

The Portlemouth ferry’s a comforting sight
As we roll straight on at the end of the ride
Salcombe itself looks pretty and bright
Though my vigour appears to have gone with the tide…
